CITY OF ORIGIN: HOMS
TIME OF DISPLACEMENT: SEPTEMBER 2015
OUR FAMILY: ASMA (2000), MOUNIRA (2002), AHMED (2005), ABDULRAHMAN (2007), OMRAN (2012)
OUR STORY (JULY 2018) : “We left Homs in 2015 because ISIS invaded our town, and my dad passed away in the fighting. We now live with our grandmother. My mom dreams of seeing me go to college and working. I had to stop going to school to school for one year, but now I’m in twelfth grade. ” - Asma
UPDATE- DECEMBER 2018: “School was a little bit difficult because it was hard to understand, but now everything is going well. My friend Fatima makes me laugh a lot because she’s always telling us jokes! Sometimes I’m troubled by the long hours, the language they teach in, and the principal who sometimes gets angry. My favorite moment, though, was when I got a 97 on my YOS exam. In the future, I see myself going to college to finish pharmacy and telling myself that I have realized mine and my father’s dreams.” - Asma
UPDATE - APRIL 2019: “My favorite place in school is actually the principal’s office. Whenever I have spare time, I go there, and he encourages me so much! If I could, I would build the school a library and books Arabic and Turkish books in it. During the mid-winter break from school, I attended YOS classes at Karam House while my siblings went to Gaziantep!” - Asma
