At Karam, we have strived hard to find the best ways to both support and empower Syrians. Today, we are proud to announce the official launch of a new program: family sponsorships. Through the sponsorship of Syrian refugee families, we hope to lift urban refugee families in Reyhanli out of poverty while providing a secure future for their children through education.
The program, made possible with the help of our donors, will ensure that refugee families, thoroughly vetted by the Karam Foundation, receive a monthly stipend of $150 to $300 on the condition that their children register and regularly attend school. Currently, there are 26 families and 56 children being supported by the program. These 56 children, many of whom were child labourers, have all enrolled in school and have been regularly attending.
Child labour amongst Syrian refugee populations is a steadily growing problem in Turkey; though the Turkish government has allowed for Syrian refugees to access the public school system, many children join the workforce in order to support their families. These children are exploited for cheap, manual labour and are often employed in harmful conditions, leaving them at risk for injury.
“We witnessed firsthand how Syrian refugee lives change dramatically for the better by being part of our program. Children are happier and parents are finally able to have a sense of stability,” said Lina Sergie Attar.
Through a donation as low as $50 a month, our donors can help give a refugee family security for today and tomorrow. Profiles of the families being supported by Karam are featured on the sponsorship page. We will provide periodic updates about the children’s progress on our website in order to stay connected with them throughout the year.
