Creating Connections

The war in Syria has sent nearly 5.6 million Syrian refugees from their homes and into the world, sometimes taking only what they can carry, to seek safety. Around 21,000 of them have made their way to the United States, where they must overcome trauma, language barriers, and employment obstacles while they attempt to connect to their new communities.

Karam Families US supports mothers, fathers, and children during this delicate stage, easing community integration by providing vital support, such as emergency aid to career development.

How We Help Refugees

Karam Families US offers support in the early, most critical stages of resettlement.

The path to independence involves overcoming barriers in basic daily life – mobility, employment, and even language – while also grappling with the psychological trauma tied to the refugee experience.

Karam Families US supports mothers, fathers, and children during this delicate stage by easing community integration and providing everything from emergency aid to career development.

Refugees have witnessed catastrophe, fought for their lives, and been torn from their homes. Still, they want nothing more than to feel a sense of belonging again and to integrate and become active members of their communities.

It’s not easy to do this alone.

How does Karam Families US help refugee communities?

Connecting with Community Networks

Refugees may feel isolated from their new environment, unable to access the social, emotional, and practical rewards of being part of a community.

In the early stages of resettlement, Karam Families US helps introduce refugees and their families to new social circles. We work with local community members and partners to promote acceptance and tolerance, and provide opportunities for connection.

Transportation Assistance

A lack of knowledge about public and private transportation options can create serious barriers to refugees seeking employment, education, and healthcare. This can worsen feelings of social, physical, and emotional isolation. We help families obtain driver’s licenses, find a car, and secure insurance.

Emergency Assistance

From housing eviction, legal issues, or significant financial difficulties, resettled families can, at times, face severe crises that are beyond their control. We provide emergency aid that keeps families together and in their homes.

Youth Opportunities

Even in communities with abundant after-school and extracurricular activities, young refugees may struggle to join, facing numerous obstacles to enrolling. We work with youth and families to make them aware of their options, and provide mental, emotional, and psychosocial support to help ease the challenges of integration.

Disability Accommodation

Refugees with physical disabilities face additional barriers to joining community activities. Our team helps provide reasonable accommodation at events, as well as modifications and transportation assistance so that community gatherings can be as inclusive and accessible as possible.

Professional and Educational Advancement

Finding professional training and educational opportunities can be daunting to a newcomer during resettlement. Karam Families US supports jobseekers and hopeful college students to attain vocational training certification, professional mentorship, and college admissions guidance.

Our Impact

We believe the global community has a responsibility to those affected by war, so we work tirelessly to support as many Syrian refugees in the United States as possible. There are families struggling to rebuild their lives and provide a promising future for their children, and they are our colleagues, coworkers, neighbors, and friends.

Karam Families US has helped over 50 families establish themselves in new communities across six states: Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington. Our work continues.
