OUR STORY:

“Our father was killed in the shelling on Aleppo and we fled to Turkey in 2016. We are a big family and when what I was earning while working in textile wasn’t enough to support the family even when my uncle helped. I was out of school for two years and my brother Muhammad was out of school for a year when Karam came to see us. I don’t need to work now and I’m going to school along with my brothers and sisters. I want to become an officer when I grow up, Muhammad wants to be a surgeon and Bayan wants to be a painter.” – Sami.

UPDATE - OCTOBER 2017: “I was out of school for 2 years now, but this year I start again. I was a bit scared in the beginning, but then I got excited. My younger brother Muhammad was out of school as well for a year, and he starts again this year. Over all my sisters are doing well at school and they are happy to be starting again. Each one us has a dream, and we’re working hard to pursue it.” – Sami.

UPDATE - DECEMBER 2017: “This year is going well so far for my siblings and I. We did our first exams and our grades are improving. I enjoy writing and whenever there is something difficult I ask mommy for help. In general we enjoy going to school, our school is Syrian but we do have Turkish friends in our neighbourhood and we get along with them.” – Rama.

UPDATE - APRIL 2018: “My favorite subjects in school are Turkish and Arabic, although the Turkish exams can be quite difficult at times. I enjoy manual work, really anything I get to use my hands with. I’ve made so many friends, most of them are Syrian and they treat me really well. I hope to become just like my mother when I grow up.” - Bayan.
