Lake Forest, IL | Full-time

Karam Foundation is seeking a Storyteller to collect, craft, and share the stories of our work with the world. We are investing in scaling our Communications Team to match our ambition, and this role will be central to spreading and amplifying our impact over the coming years.

You are creative. You don’t depend on conventions when creating a project. You never stop thinking of different ways to communicate ideas and stories to the world. You are open to learning innovative methods of storytelling and gaining new skills.

You connect with authentic empathy. You are deeply interested in listening to other people’s experiences, journeys, triumphs, and struggles. You are genuinely curious and know just the right questions to ask and how to ask them. You translate their stories with utmost care and trust. You know that the most powerful stories are exchanged through authentic connections.

You are a writer. Nothing excites you more than delivering well-crafted stories from tweets and Instagram captions to video scripts and printed donor reports to longform essays. You take pride in writing content that is authentic and clear, powerful and moving. You know words matter and you are always thinking of the perfect way to deliver impactful messages to different audiences.

You care. You are personally motivated by a love of humanity that doesn’t stop at borders. You are driven to share the stories of others in order to create a more equitable society. You want to be part of our mission of building a better world.

You are collaborative. You carry out projects with positive energy and want to work alongside our small team and partners to get things done.

You are humble. You know that this work is not about you. It is about the collective us. You don’t let ego, process, or dogma get in the way.

We are a Syrian-led organization founded in 2007 in Chicago. We have been supporting Syrian communities in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and the US since 2011. We've developed various innovative education projects including community innovation centers (Karam House) for refugee teenagers in Turkey and a higher education scholarship program for refugee youth, as well as sustainable development and smart aid projects to address the evolving obstacles that Syrians face.

We have built two Karam Houses, innovative workspaces in Istanbul and Reyhanli, Turkey, which defy traditional approaches to refugee education. At Karam Houses, hundreds of Syrian refugee teens learn through access to technology (maker spaces, internet, computers), expert mentorship (Syrians refugee architects and engineers), and a sophisticated design-based curriculum (developed by MIT grads) that teaches youth how to build their ideas and their community.

We think about refugees and humanitarian aid differently and so we do things differently. We believe in investing deeply in communities affected by conflict. We are on a mission to build 10,000 Leaders for the Future of Syria by 2028.
