AHMAD and abdullah

OUR STORY: We left our home in Syria to escape the violence and to continue our education. Our father died before we left Syria. Our mother is our sole caretaker. She works odd jobs to support all of us and to send us to school. We see our mother struggling to afford our living expenses. We love school and we want to continue our education. Since Karam visited us last month, we are able to attend school and feel less worried for our mother.

UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 2016: "This summer we both took Qu’ran classes and visited our relatives. We really missed our friends and our school during our vacation. Abdullah wants to be first in his class because there’s a prize that you get when you’re first. I really hope he gets it." - Ahmad + Abdullah

UPDATE - JANUARY 2017: "This semester, we got our results back and we did really well on our exams. Abdullah got first in his class, just like he wanted. My favorite classes are Physics and Chemistry and I love tinkering around and making inventions. I use the internet every day to find things to make. My best friend, Qader, moved to Ankara, but we still keep in touch online every day. Abdullah is very popular and is friends with almost everyone in his entire class." -Love, Ahmad

UPDATE - APRIL 2017: "Ahmad loves math class and playing soccer these days, meanwhile I love drawing. I don't have a favorite color because I like them all. Ahmad did really well in school, I am so proud of him. I came out fourth in my class. Our mom is also proud of us. We are also making new friends, which is really exciting." -Love Abdullah

UPDATE - OCTOBER 2017: “I am now in grade 12 and am excited to be going back to school. The teachers at our school are great and they always encourage us. This year, me and my brother Ahmed want to rank first in our classes. I am excited to be an engineer when I am older. My mom is so happy we are in school while she develops her sewing business at home!” - Abdullah

UPDATE - JANUARY 2018: “I got a full mark on my maths and sciences tests! At home my mother helps me with my homeworks, and at school my teacher and my friends Khaled and Zain help me. Ahmed and I are always excited to be going to school, however it is a little difficult for us to fully express ourselves in Turkish. My science teacher is my favourite and she recently gave me an award for being a good student. Ahmad goes to Karam Lab and he is currently working on doing a 3D giraffe” – Abdullah.

UPDATE - MAY 2018: “I have four best friends in school, we always stand up for each other. My brother Abdulla loves painting and I think that he’s very talented. On mother’s day we brought our mom some flowers and sweets.” – Ahmad.

UPDATE- AUGUST 2018: “We help my mother a lot with the house chores and that makes her very happy. She lets us go to the pool and swim whenever we want. I faced some difficulties in Turkish so I attended summer courses at Karam House so I can progress. During the World Cup, I initially cheered for Spain than Belgium. I don’t believe it was a fair game. I think about how I need to focus in school and manage my time better. I finished my last year of highschool and applied to a university. Right now I’m taking a Turkish course, YOS prep course, photography workshop, and Karam Lab. Sometimes I feel a little pressured because of all the activities I’m involved in. My favorite memories this summer was my trip with Karam Antakya. We took so many pictures there and held an exhibition with our photos.” - Ahmad.

UPDATE - DECEMBER 2018: “I’m currently preparing for my YOS exam, which I need to take in order to go to college as I already finished high school. I want to study electrical engineering in college, and, in five years, I’ll be thinking about how to begin my professional life and build my future. If I could give one piece of advice to people, I would tell them to not quit what they’re doing when they face problems.” - Ahmad

UPDATE - APRIL 2019: “At school, I love the courtyard because it’s very big, and we get to play and exercise there. We play different sports like soccer and basketball. If I had a lot of money, I would develop and improve the school: I would paint the walls and fix the stairs! During our mid-year break, my brother and I went to the lake and visited our relatives. Spring is actually my favorite season because the flowers bloom and the wind is so nice.” Abdullah

UPDATE - OCTOBER 2019: “I graduated from high school with a 67% on the YOS exam! I applied to university and got accepted to study refinery/electrical engineering! I'm really proud of myself and what I have achieved. I'm even waiting to hear back from a few more universities! I remember pushing myself not to quit, and I'm so happy I followed my own advice. I can't wait for the coming years!” — Ahmad
