MOHAMMED, NOUR, RABIA
CITY OF ORIGIN: HOMS
LENGTH OF DISPLACEMENT: 3 YEARS
STATUS: EXTREME POVERTY, CHILD LABOR
OUR FAMILY: MOHAMMED (19), NOUR (15), RABIA (12)
We left our home in Syria to escape the war and heavy bombardment of our city. Our older brother, Mohammed, has been out of school for 2 years. He fixes cars for a living and uses his salary to support our family. Our mother has a job as a cook, and our father works odd jobs to make ends meet. Since Karam visited our home last month, Mohammed is very excited to stop working and go back to school. He will begin 10th grade.
UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 2016: "This summer, we went to Kilis to visit our family and that was so fun! We missed them a lot but not as much as we missed our classmates and friends. That’s why we’re so excited to go back to school. We are going to make sure we work extra hard so that we can be first in our class. We are all going to improve our Turkish and Math skills this year. Mohamad is a little sad to say goodbye to summer, but that’s because he will miss having time to visit our family. My sister and I love school."
UPDATE - JANUARY 2017: "Rabia and I did really well on our exams, but poor Mohammad had to spend his break studying since his exams are not until next semester! Our favorite subject is Turkish, Mohammad and I like it because we think it is important and Rabia enjoys learning it. Although we were not able to go to school for a long time, we are adjusting now that we're back. We have improved a lot since going back, at least that's what our teachers have been telling our mom!" -Love, Nour
UPDATE - APRIL 2017: "I love to draw and Mohammad loves to read. Nour is the best one in Turkish so she helps us out a lot. Mohammad's reading and writing are improving daily and I know that he works so hard to improve his grades. He even sees a private tutor from time to time, he is hat dedicated and determined. I am so proud of him and all the hard work that he does. As a reward, he got to go to Mersin on a little holiday with his friends." -Love, Rabia
UPDATE - OCTOBER 2017: “Our mother is very grateful for how much better our life has become. We bought our school supplies and are ready for this school year, so far I have made many friends at school and I spend most of my time with them. One day I want to become a lawyer.” – Nour.
