CITY OF ORIGIN: ALEPPO
TIME OF DISPLACEMENT: FEBRUARY 2014
STATUS: ORPHANED FROM FATHER + EXTREME POVERTY
OUR FAMILY: YUSUF (2008), BASSMA (2010)
“Like many others, we were internally displaced in Aleppo due to the violence in the city, and when there was no safe home for us anymore in Syria we left to Turkey. Our dad died prior to the war and we were living with our mom. We came to Istanbul in 2014 and mom started working at a textile workshop until it ran out of business. We are currently sharing a small house with our relatives. I want to become a footballer when I grow up, and Bassma wants to become a teacher. We are both in first grade because I missed a year.” – Yusuf.
UPDATE - OCTOBER 2017: “My sister Bassma has not started start school yet, but I have. I go to a Turkish school. I love cars and when I grow up I want to have a big showroom for cars, my sister wants to be a teacher. I liked it better when we used to live in Syria.” – Yusuf.
UPDATE - DECEMBER 2017: “School is great, my brother and I both did our exams, I think I did better than him because my grades were higher. Our dad usually helps us study for our hard subjects. For Yusuf science class is the hardest and P.E is the easiest, for me I find all my subjects to be easy. We are working everyday to make our Turkish better. Yusuf likes his Turkish teacher, Mustafa, the most because he is very kind and teaches them some helpful tips.” – Basma.
UPDATE - APRIL 2018: “I really enjoy my Turkish language course and math, and dislike Arabic. I love playing football with my friends, while my sister loves playing on the swing at the playground. I’ve made new friends this year such as Saifo, Amro, Bahjat, and Yahya. We spend our time playing football. We all root for Real Madrid.” - Yusuf.
