LENGTH OF DISPLACEMENT: 2.5 YEARS
STATUS: DISABLED PARENT + EXTREME POVERTY
OUR FAMILY: ABDUL-KAREEM (10), HADI (8), ABEER (6)
OUR STORY(APRIL 2015): We all stay at home to take care of our father, Mohammad, who was paralyzed after being shot and imprisoned by the government for 9 months. We have been in Turkey for 2.5 years. Our mother goes out every morning looking for work, in order to support our family.
UPDATE - MARCH 2016: "We really like school. Our classes are big but our teachers are very nice. I really like my Turkish teacher, he is very nice and he plays with us. I like drawing, it’s my hobby. My litte brother, Hadi, just started first grade. He has one teacher and he likes him very much. Hadi’s favorite subject is science. We both really enjoy our school and we have made friends in our classes. Thank you for your support!" - Abdul-Kareem
UPDATE - JUNE 2016: "Since enrolling in school, our lives have improved so much. My brother Hadi used to act out and communicate aggressively with us. But now, he behaves so well. He learned how to read and write and now he is such a good student, ranked second best in his class. I’m also doing much better. I focus on school and I feel more patient with everyone since I’ve learned how to read and write. I work hard like my brother, and I’m the third best in class. Abeer, our baby sister, stays at home with my mom and dad. She has now learned how to count. Usually though, she just wants to eat banana flavored ice cream which is her favorite." - Abdul-Kareem
UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 2016: "This summer, Abdul-Kareem, Hadi and I would to go the park. We all learned how to ride bicycles and I think that’s now my favorite thing in the world to do. Hadi and Abdul-Kareem both went to the summer school to improve their Turkish and to take Qu’ran classes. We are so excited to go to school, and I’m really excited to start Kindergarten!" - Abeer
UPDATE - JANUARY 2017: "The first semester has been cool so far! I went on a trip with the Scouts and school, which was really really fun especially after being told that I did well at school! Luckily, Abeer and Hadi also did well. My favorite subject these days is English and I'm always learning new words. Abeer loves to draw and Hadi likes Arabic and reading. I am also very happy that my best friend Maher came to school -I hadn't seen him in 3 years!" -Love, Abdulkareem
UPDATE - APRIL 2017: "We all did really well on our exams, which is probably because of how much we enjoy going to school. My mom is especially proud of me, because of how well I've been doing. My brothers both play a little bit too much but they still do really well. My brother Abdulkareem only struggles a little with Turkish class, but he is improving daily". -Love, Abdeer
UPDATE - OCTOBER 2017: “Over the summer we’ve been to Istanbul for a visit along with our mother, we learnt Qu’ran and joined The Peace Club. Now I’m in first grade and it’s very exciting! I love my Arabic teacher. The best thing about school is the slide in the playground, and the worst thing would be that I have to walk to school because there aren’t any buses.” – Abeer.
